Chagford
On the north of the Moor. Easy access
from the A30
dual carriageway.
On the Two Moors
Way, Chagford is my
top recommendation
for a walking holiday base on Dartmoor. A most attractive 'Stannary town'. Which means that the tin miners used to bring their tin to be assayed, weighed and sold in the town. Most locals think of it as a village although it has 2 banks, 4 pubs and several places for tea, coffee and a slice of cake... and two of most amazing hardware shops, Bowden's and Webbers, in the country. There is a busy little Flea Market here each Friday morning in the Jubilee Hall next to the (paying) car park. Castle Drogo the last castle to be built in England, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, sits high above the River Teign valley to the north within the most breathtaking setting. Do find time to see the fine stained glass windows in the beautiful 15th century church.
