Okehampton on the North Western corner of Dartmoor.
Just off the A30 dual carriageway. Walkers can walk straight onto the moor at Okehampton.
It's a proper town with a hospital, banks, hospital, 2 chemists, several pubs, small shops and 3 major supermarkets, Waitrose, Lidl and Somerfield now the Co-op. Okehampton has a modern indoor swimming pool with a fitness group, sports hall, dance and exercise studio and tennis courts in Simmons Park.
Okehampton holds a busy annual agricultural show, which this year 2010 will be on Thursday 12th August with horses,
cattle and sheep shows, vintage tractors and classic cars, miniature ponies, rabbits in hutches and even pigeons!
A food hall, craft tent, trade stands, dog show and tug of war competions, it's a traditional farming community show.
Okehampton Carnival will be on October 16th with children's procession and an evening procession.
The Victorian railway station is largely intact and well worth a visit. Travel on one of the trains on Saturday, Sunday
and on Bank Holiday Mondays. The train journey down to Meldon Quarry from Okehampton Station is most enjoyable.
Later on in the year and just in time for Christmas, the town will hold an Edwardian Evening on Thursday
December 9th with carol singing, Morris dancing and a chestnut roast.
