Cycling on Dartmoor in Devon and where to find bike hire.

Many parts of Dartmoor are a challenge for even the fittest of souls, but each weekend throughout the year we
see groups of lycra clad cyclists, often at 50 yard intervals, head down, intent on enjoying our Moorland scenery.
Cycling on Dartmoor enables you to approach wildlife quietly, giving you much more of a chance to get a better view.

If you don't fancy riding on the roads on the Moor, there is the brilliant Granite Way Cycle track
that runs 11 miles in length from Okehampton Station to Lydford. It's a fantastic traffic free route for all the family,with wild flowers, bird song and stunning views way off in to Cornwall.

The route takes in Meldon viaduct and Lake viaduct and finishing (or starting) at Lydford.
It is route 27 on the National Cycle Network, a glorious traffic free journey from Coast to Coast.

Where small children can cycle for long spells in safety.
We have been on the Granite way with our bikes several times.
Take a picnic with you and make a day of it.

Hotel accommodatin at Lydford.

Apparently the super Lydford House now has to be classified as a Guest House because to be a hotel, they would need to have
their restaurant open 7 nights a week instead of the 6 that they already have in place. Barmy. So I am including it in this section because in every other way it is a hotel, and a good one at that. Bike hire at £10 Adult as the Granite Way cycle track is adjacent.

If you are a driver, please give groups of cyclist a nice wide berth and please make sure that you don't drive
too closely on overtaking. Some of our lanes are single track and it only takes a few extra seconds to pass safely.
