The Dartmoor Teamrooms 2008 food review
The Dartmoor Tearooms, Moretonhampstead, November 16th 2008 Tel 01647 441116

I've known about the Dartmoor Tearooms in Moreton since earlier this year when they phoned and asked me to come and take some photos for them. I later made them a website, and over the months of popping in now and again to keep
things updated, I have been very impressed with how they run their business. True foodies need to know that George the husband in the operation is bonkers about good food. Not only how to cook it, but it's provenance and quality.
Although I'm certain that he could turn any old piece of bargain offermince into something utterly enjoyable.
He is a star in the kitchen and turns his hand to making everything that he can himself.

That includes fresh bread, the mayonnaise, meringues, delicious fat headed scones and batches of heavenly teacakes.
It's only a small enterprise, but cosy and inviting, with I'm delighted to say only a brief menu that changes to offer
what's in season and what George deems to be worthy. They have only recently decided to offer a Sunday Roast,
so we decided to take pals along to give it a try. At £7.50 the lunch includes a glass of wine or fruit juice. What a joy to find freshly cooked cabbage on the plate topped with a few scraps of smoked bacon, and the most supremely sweet mashed parsnip served in a piping hot ramekin. The beef was tender, the roast potatoes had good flavour, and the Yorkshire pudding passed the test with flying colours. Quality gravy made with stock from the meat.... just what I

expected.I'm in two minds as to whether to tell you about this excellent food outlet really, because I know that once
word gets around it will become a 'can we get in sort of place' it is so very nice to visit. Daily newspapers, pleasant
staff, a changing menu - not overpriced. What more could we want ? Take a look at the apple and blackcurrant tartlet,
dusted in sugar and served with a blob of clotted cream - local of
course from Devonshire Farmhouse just up the road at Murchington.
Following the excellent puddings, (see above) and bread
and butter pudding for Rob, we opted for 3 of
over 20 different teas on the tea menu.
What a great finish to what was super Sunday treat. If you don't manage to find a street parking place, I think that
parking in the Moreton car parks during the Winter is free.
The Tearoom is to be found in Cross Street, that's the road signed for Exeter.
They tell me that they will be closing for 4 weeks or so during
the winter months for 'improvements'. Funny that, 'cos I don't know how
this cute little
place could be improved.
... Do give it a try it's great
