lunch and you won't need an evening meal that day. It really should be advertised as an afternoon feast.
Rob and I had been showing the American author Janet Ruth and her family the delights of Chagford, followed by a walk to Scorhill Stone Circle to see for themselves the granite stones on the front cover of her latest book 'Brenin's Crown'.

Janet had bought the photo from Rob my husband, so on a family trip to London, they came down to meet us and to see the ancient stone circle for real. They treated us to lunch at the Three Crowns in Chagford, (also good ) so following our tramp across the Moor on an utterly perfect day, we treated them to afternoon tea at the Mill End. Check out the pictures.

Scones, fruit and plain, mountains of local clotted cream with gorgeous chunky strawberry jam, home made shortbread biscuits and classy fruit cake with a handful of fresh strawberries to boot. It took the receptionist 3 journeys over the lawn with gaint trays to deliver it all, and utterly yummy it was.

Harry and Orvis the 2 resident labradors at the hotel, are eager to say hello to afternoon tea customers and decamp from table to table once they have decided whether or not a certain party might be likely candidates in the crumb dropping department. Julie the friendly receptionist will move them on if necessary, but as this is a dog friendly hotel anyway,

I can't imagine anyone getting upset about this comical pet badgering. Andrew above was sorely tempted to cave in.

At £7 per head the food and the setting are good value and the tea I might add was most refreshing.
For anyone wanting to spring a surprise a birthday party with the wow factor and the catering sorted,
I couldn't think of any better suggestion. I'm sure that if you were to ask the hotel, they would be able to organise
flowers, a cake and candles. Let me know and I can come with the camera too !! Should the weather turn showery,
the hotel lounge, with baby grande piano and real fire in the winter, is comfortable and classy.

What a perfect finish to our short Introductory Dartmoor tour. The Ruth family say they will be back.
I think the afternoon tea at the Mill End might just have been the icing on the cake.

At the close of each food review, I ask the question - would we go again? No need to ask in this case is there?
The bill for afternoon tea for 6 of us was £42. Seems the right price for real napkins !!
