Hilary offers evening meals 3 or 4 times a week, so staying in for a meal is a good option for Mums and Dads. The cycle route 27 is not too far away.

Mary Cuming has been a farmer's wife for 44 years, and I feel that children staying here would feel like they were staying at a favourite Granny's house. With lots of space in the garden to run around whilst Mum and Dad admire the view. Moretonhampstead has an outdoor pool in the Summer which is an added attraction. I suggest that primary school children rather than boistrous teenagers should visit.

This B&B is within walking distance of Jethro's. One of the best family rooms that I know is here at Lobhill Farmhouse. On the ground floor, it has a double bed and a single bed plus a good size bed settee, so if you have 2 or 3 very young children this would be ideal. The family room has its own front door and space for the children to play on the lawn right outside. There is a Summer House for guests in the large garden. The only one thing that I will mention is that there is also a small lake on site. Perfect for introducing children to fish and frogs, but you will have to keep an eye on small toddlers at all times. Go for it !!

Rosemary is a typical favourite Granny figure who enjoys her own grandchildren in the house. So there will be a few toys tucked behind the settee, and she welcomes regular families back year after year. I receive fond e-mails from her guests. She is not into e-mail so you will need to ring her. And you may like to know that there is a pub at Whiddon Down which happily welcomes children in for meals.

I thought before my visit that Brook Farmhouse had only one bedroom on offer, but actually there are THREE bedrooms which Penny only lets to one party. She has 2 large double rooms and a child's bedroom, again with a double bed on offer. Shared bathroom, but a great space at the top of your own private (very steep)staircase plus your own guest lounge. If Granny and Grandad are agile enough to tackle the stairs (there is a grab rail) then this is the perfect place for an extended family holiday. PLUS there is a proper cot on request.

One of the rooms has 2 double beds, so if you all like sleeping together this is the perfect solution. Steven Spielberg filmed War Horse in this area of the Moor and said "I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor".

The family room has a table and chairs in a bay window with a views to the Moors. Modern fittings, especially the en-suite shower rooms - very swish. Tea trays, flat screen tv's. Off road parking. Outdoor toys and picnic area in the small campsite at the rear. The pub has food on offer. Ideal if you like a drink and want to keep an eye on the children at the same time. Small children NO, but I suggest that bookworm teenagers would love it. There's an outdoor swimming pool in town, so make sure you bring a selection of beach towels. In the Summer daily buses travel from Exeter to Plymouth, and sitting at the top of the double decker on it's journey over the Moor, through ponies and sheep and keen walkers is a great experience. A treat for everyone, and no car park to worry about.

If you have small children up to the age of 12 then this is a very good place to stay. The bunk bedroom is right next door to Mum and Dad at your own end of the house. There is a double bed plus a settee that makes into a double bed in the garden room suite on the ground floor at Penpark.
The suite has it's own private entrance from the garden with lovely wide open doors leading out to a pretty seating with table outside. With it's own shower oom and loo, it is a good suggestion for a young family. As the website only shows the prices for adults you will have to drop Maddy an e-mail with the ages of your children for her to quote you a price,
but I think you will be very happy with what you book.

On my last visit to Mavis she explained that although she has a family room and a dedicated single, she does not go out of her way to encourage children. However she has families who book year after year. I think because of the great food, evening meals, the large garden and Mavis's wonderfully welcoming home. My advice - if you have well behaved children, yes Knole Farm is for you. If they are a bit rowdy, think twice.... I am sure you can read what I am trying to say. (Don't bring brats !!)

I have taken a look at all of Carolyn's rooms, and she can easily take families. Some rooms take a double plus 2 and some take a double plus one. One large room at the rear of the house has a double room with a single room inside it, which is ideal if you wish to stay in in the evenings but not have your children in with you. This single room would be a great place for 2 smaller children to play whilst you are watching University Challenge !! Evening meal £16.50

Children love this large old house. Especially children who read books like Black Beauty and Enid Blyton's Famous five books. To be fair the girl on reception tells me that 'it's a bit tight' in the sleeps 6, but we like that kind of honesty don't we? Minimum of two nights, but on the plus side the room rate includes FREE ENTRY into the River Dart Country Park which costs. £7.95 per person aged from 5 upwards. So you can knock over £47 off the bill each day, if you are bringing four kids over the age of 5. That works out at less than £100 for a family of 6 per night, and I reckon that's a very good deal.

This is a very quiet area with the most beautiful of garden settings in a tranquil valley high on Dartmoor. I think it would be good for a family with small children, as if you take the two rooms on offer, a double and a twin, then the guest's sitting room and the one bathroom will be all yours, in fact, you will have one half of the house all to yourselves. Not a place for teenagers who wish to socialise, but perfect for a get away from it all break. Organic food wherever possible and green minded owners. There are a couple of hardy outdoor toys in the meadow and Colette and Martin have two small grandsons living close by.
