Having pushed a heavy wheelchair for my late friend Brian, and driven him around Dartmoor in his specially converted van, I do know the problems associated with getting around for handicapped people. And I use that term without any hesitation in p.c. terms. Because life for disabled people is hard enough without all the hype about 'what we should
call them' .If you or your friend is in a wheelchair then I hope that some of these suggestions are helpful to you.

Excellent wheelchair facilities here at Bracken Tor. An activity hostel with loads to do for children, ranging from abseiling & climbing to canoeing & local kayaking. If you can manage the step at the front door, there is the best of ground floor accommodation just inside. With large folding doors between the sitting room and the bedroom. It has especially wide folding doors between the private sitting room and the double bedroom. There is a power shower in the bathroom, but it is within the bath, so here again, some thought must be given as to whether this is going to suit. Slightly tricky to gain access to the garden for a wheelchair, but once you are there.... it's beautiful.

This campsite also has a bunkhouse with dedicated disabled facilities and well thought out facilities and the owners are a 'go for it' welcoming,traditional Dartmoor farming family. Washing up and laundry, drying room and the option to take cooked meals or build yourself a campfire and enjoy a barbecue. The same good facilities are on hand for disabled campers too.

You will not find a better equipped campsite than this if you are in a wheelchair. The toilets, showers and laundry facilities are excellent. A well organised campsite with an exercise area for dogs. There is a barrier at the entrance to the campsite that is down at night. This is strictly an adults only camp, so please do not even consider taking a babe in arms...

The farmhouse at Lobhill in full sunshine. This is a well organised Country Living feel house not far from Okehampton in Devon.A very pretty and romantic bedroom which has its own balcony overlooking the garden, at the Lobhill Farmhouse at Lewdown.overlooking the pond in the dleightful garden at Lobhill Farmhouse Bed and breakfast. There is a summerhouse in the garden for guests which is just out of shot.This is a double room with a good sized en-suite shower room at Lobhill B&B not far from Okehampton.

I can heartily recommend the ground floor bedroom for anyone with a wheelchair. There is no slope to gain access, but once indoors, the large room has a double and single bed so a twin choice is possible, and a bed settee. And a shower room with shower in cubicle. Its not built as disabled and wheelchair designed. But it ticks most of the important boxes and the garden and Summer House are accesible. Parking with lots of space is just outside the ground floor room.

Paradise for hyperactive kids of all ages and all abilities. Campers who stay on the caravan park have free access to the adventure park which is bursting with Commando Assault course (for big and little children!),Pirate Ship , Toddlers beach , Toddlers Playground (Lilliput), Spiders web, Wooden play fort ,Cows Udders, Snake Slides, Zip wires and Jungle Fun. Plenty of supervised play plus canoeing and Water Zorbs. Go for it !! Not that they welcome noisy teenagers. As their website quotes "If you are looking for late nights and wild parties, we would politely suggest you find an alternative venue!"

Hooray, Wilson Cottage is very wheelchair accessible! There are wide spaces around everything. Large shower in the bathroom with plenty of room for the sensible shower stool should you wish to use it. Space by the front door to park, along with a ramp and grab rails at the door. Another ramp in the garden gives easy access onto the sunny private patio. Central heating included in the price and triple glazing installed. Lisa herself has a slight disability and is keen to answer any questions you might have. She offers a laundry service should you need one.

Joy of joys this wonderful barn conversion has space for 10 guests and the bedroom on the ground floor has twin beds and a set of bunk beds. With a great en-suite shower room and space to get a wheelchair through all doorways, it may well be just what you are looking for. Lots of space to manoeuvre inside and out. Park the car on the level close to the front door. Ring Sue the friendly owner if you have any questions, she will be happy to let you know what is possible if you need any special requirements.

Provided you can manage the one step into the cottage, the rest is on one level. There is an access statement on the website, giving all manner of information such as that there is a grab rail fitted in the shower. I have visited this cottage and I feel that is is perfect for one person and good for two if one of the guests has only one or two mobility problems. I don't think that it is brilliant for a wheelchair user who needs masses of space. The bedroom and bathroom would prove too small if you needed a second person to help with washing etc and the shower has a step. There is a lovely garden which guests are welcome to use at the back of the owners property, BUT it is up steps.

I am adding the Mill End Hotel to my list of extra care accommodation because they have several downstairs rooms.
There is a slight problem in that to reach them, you have to journey through an area that has 3 steps up through a doorway.
But these room have access to the grounds through balcony doors, so if you can negotiate through them all is well. I intend to study the set up more closely in the next few days (early Sept) with my camera in hand, so that I can add photos to this website.

The Stable cottage at Budleigh Farm has level outside access with larger than normal entrance. The bathroom has a small bath with shower over and fixed handrails in place. The toilet also has a vertical handrail. The Linney has one small step up but is all on one level once you are inside. To reach the swimming pool, there is one step down from the garden. There is a laundry on site. There is an access statement on the Budleigh Farm website. Judith has been a landlady for years, she is very approachable, so ring her to discuss anthing you might need to know.

This is most definitely NOT wheelchair friendly, BUT I am including it on my extra care page because Audrey herself has 2 autistic grandchildren, and she is keen to offer holiday accommodation to families who might need an understanding landlady. This cottage is in the middle of nowhere. Very private. Audrey and her husband are very eco minded, and the kind of folk who will spend time ensuring that all children will have a good holiday. The whole cottage is available from £240 to top price of £760 during the Summer, or just the ground floor from £200 to £420. Stay for 2 weeks and they will reduce the fortnight charge by £50.

The Coach House at Holne Park House has 3 ground floor rooms all ensuite that are suitable for wheelchairs and less able bodied guests. And the great thing is that the price of £90 per room includes free entry to the River Dart Adventure Park which has plenty for everyone. Staff at the park are helpful and keen for everyone to have fun. It's a very fun place.

I have not listed the Travel Lodge at Whiddon Down as a recommendation within my B&B pages as I do not suggest that you come all the wheelchair symbolthe way to wonderful Devon and not sample our individual hospitality. One Travelodge is much like another, fairly basic,
BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A BATHROOM THAT IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR A WHEELCHAIR USER whilst
you are on holiday, then you might like to know that all Travelodges have extra rooms on the ground floor
close to the reception, that are tailor made for disabled travellers. If you click onto my photo of the bathroom
above, it will take you to the full size image, so that you can see the grip handles and the layout.
The bedroom is large enough for wheelchair users to move around and has a TV and tea and coffee making facilities. There is an emergency pull cord at one side of the bed and another over the bath. There is no breakfast in the price which is why they seem so cheap, but as with every Travelodge, there is a cafe close by, in this case it's a Little Chef. There are several disabled parking bays at the front of the building, and the staff here are friendly and helpful.

 

A couple of things worth a mention about Bovey Tracey. The free playpark has a tailor made swing with a sensible chair
to hold a disabled child and the nearby swimming pool has facilities for the disabled including a poolside chair hoist.

And just worth a mention if your journey to Dartmoor takes you past Exeter.
A most wonderful playpark not far from the M5 where anyone in a wheelchair can enjoy a swing and a seesaw in the
free to enter park for all abilities The Playpark is just the most wonderful place to visit with handicapped children.

There is a safe net swing for children who cannot 'hold on', a roundabout for wheelchair users and it's full of smiling faces. Easy parking adjacent. You will need a radar key for the wheelchair swing. Details and a map of how to find The Playpark can be found on the website.
