Many parts of Dartmoor are a challenge for even the fittest of souls, but each weekend throughout the year we
see groups of lycra clad cyclists, often at 50 yard intervals, head down, intent on enjoying our Moorland scenery.

If you don't fancy riding on the roads on the Moor, there is the brilliant Granite Way Cycle
track
that runs 11 miles in length from Okehampton Station to Lydford. It's a fantastic
traffic
free
route
for all the family with wild flowers, bird song and stunning views way off into Cornwall.

The route takes in
Meldon viaduct and Lake viaduct and finishing (or starting) at Lydford.
It is route 27 on the National Cycle Network, a glorious traffic free journey from Coast
to Coast where small children can cycle for long spells in safety. We have been on the Granite way with our bikes several times. It is noticeably quieter on weekdays and out of school holidays. Take a picnic with you and make a day of it. It's totally brilliant.

Did you know that cycling saves you over 40 pence per mile against car miles ?

There are actually 3 cyclists in this bunch. You might need lights at any time of the day on the Moors.
Sadly not every car driver is a considerate road user, so in our tight little lanes you may have to be prepared to get
off your bike and squeeze into the hedge if you encounter someone who is not too adept at reversing, and please remember that if the weather turns, or as we say "closes in" and the mist arrives, you do need to put your lights on

3 great paperbacks for mountain bikers. Click any one to take you to a page of UK mountain bike books.

Here we have a group of cyclists at The New Forge in
Chagford. Typical blokes on bikes. They know where
the best cake and a good pot of tea can be found.
As with walking it is important to take something with
you to drink. It's very easy to become dehydrated
whilst out in the fresh air using up loads of energy.
Pack a couple of drinks in plastic bottles that won't smash
if they fall to the road, and a choc bar will rapidly give
you an energy boost should you find yourself flagging.
A lightweight anorak or raincoat will be worth it's weight
in gold if you are overtaken by wet weather.
But your head will be kept dry anyway won't it
because you will of course be wearing a decent cycle helmet WON'T YOU ?
If you are travelling with your bikes but
don't want to take them say to the
theatre in the evening and your accommodation provider hasn't got
space for you in a shed or similar,
you might like the look of this.
<- Bike Storage Tent.
Currently selling at £44.
Good idea to have in your own garden
in the Summer when you use your bikes
more frequently or even for the winter
when you might think about storing your bikes indoors to keep them tidy.
Did you know that we have a free ice cream voucher if you book a bike on Dartmoor Click for my vouchers page.

Fancy having some assistance with your cycling ?
You might like to consider a power bike.
Deploying the motor for the Moorland hills.
Ideal for those of us who still like to get out and
about but welcome a little help with the legwork.
Amazon offer a range of electric bikes and small electric scooters that make Dartmoor's hills
less of an ordeal. Click this link to take a look
at folding bikes, scooters and electric bikes.

Mum Sara from Evesham tries out a tag along bike from Devon Cycle Hire near to Okehampton at Easter this year.
She got off to a wobbly start but once on board it was smiles all the way along the Granite Way Cycle Trail.
No cars on the track just walkers and cyclists, all having a great time. Click here for the bike prices page.

The Tour of Britain Cycle Race comes through Dartmoor each September.
I add the stages and timings for the journey over the Moor as soon as they are published. This year the race came through on Thursday the 15th Sept and travelled through Cheriton Bishop, Whiddon Down, Moretonhampstead Haytor Rocks, Coffin Stone, Huccaby Tor, Postbridge and Bovey Tracey.

Cycling on Dartmoor enables you to approach wildlife quietly, giving you much more of a chance to get a better view.
