Garden lovers and those with an arty interest
won't want to miss this Sculpture Trail that takes
place throughout September at Heathercombe Gardens
near to Widecombe.
The Heathercombe EDGE Sculpture Trail is an annual
arts event sited in the beautiful Fairy Wood at Heathercombe, Manaton, Dartmoor and is part of the DEVON OPEN STUDIOS

garden in the Dartmoor area. We always come home
that little bit inspired to work more hard on our own plot.

Stone Lane Gardens Arboretum, near to Chagford.
Off the A382 "It's well worth a visit" 2 - 6 p.m.
Stone Lane Gardens is the setting for the National
Collection of wild-origin Birch and Alder trees.
A unique and comprehensive collection of Birches
and Alders - the best of it's kind in the UK.
The garden holds an interesting sculpture exhibition each year starting early May.

This beautiful specimen is called
Tea and Crumpets, and is one of the many
hundreds of superb plants
that you will find at Bowden's Hostas.

The National Trust property Castle Drogo is at
Drewsteignton where the Gardens are open all year
Do see the gardens in the Autumn when they are
full of rich colour. There is an interesting seed collection
day each year, when the Castle gardeners explain how to do just that later on in the year. You need to bring envelopes!
There is a brilliant cafe at the reception. See my food review for pictures of the food.
The Castle opening times are March to Oct 11 to 5 daily. November 5th to December 11th times are 11 to 4.30 and from the 17th to 23rd of December 11 to 4.30 See the Castle website for further info.

Rosemoor R.H.S. is in
North Devon.
A twenty minute drive from Dartmoor,
but if you are in the area, and garden minded you won't want to miss it.
It's well worth a trip as it is
superb at all times of the year.
Open April to Sept. 10-6 and

including the cafe and shop

The Eden Project - Less than an hour's drive from Dartmoor.
Impressive gardens with of course lots of organic ideas on how to manage
a plot using the earth's resources.
Gates open 9.30 + biomes 10a.m. til 6p.m.

There are some wonderful private gardens open to the public
on Dartmoor for charity for just a day or 2 each year.

This stunning country house was designed by Clough Williams-Ellis (famous for Portmeirion). If he came to visit today, I think he

If you like gardening then you will enjoy chatting to Colette Brady. She is an excellent gardener. As she says, she does all the
planting and Martin her husband takes care of the lawns and heavy stuff. They have a bed and breakfast with a tea room on one of
the most interesting estates high up on the Moor. Off road parking, good eating places within a short drive. Birdsong all around!
