A trip to South Heathercombe for a Devonshire Cream Tea.

Friday 5th August. Cream tea at South Heathercombe bed and breakfast. Review by Jill Pendleton.

Gil the new puppy at South Heathercombe on Dartmoor

I can't quite make my mind up what to rave about first. The garden, the enchanting new puppy or the cream tea.

a welcome from the new puppy at South Heathercombe

Jane and Helen had been housesitting at a neighbour's house and I asked them if they would like to come and take
tea at South Heathercombe with me. The owners Martin and Colette are new mine hosts and knowing how the ladies
love to visit beautiful gardens, this seemed just up their street. The spare seat in the car went to Sylvia my next door neighbour on the other side. "Do you fancy a run out over the Moor Sylvia?", "I'll just get my coat Jill".

The wooden chalet building for taking a cream tea.

Heathercombe is a tranquil valley on the south of the Moor not far from Widecombe, where over the years,
the owners have transformed the site into a spectacular garden and outdoor sculpture gallery.

Martin and Colette at South Heathcombe, part of the estate, offer the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing

pot of tea in a very pretty sloping garden with a wooden chalet style tea room.

a split scone and 2 glass dishes. one with clotted cream and one with raspberry jam.

Not only can Colette cook a tasty full English breakfast using organic produce, she also turns out a pretty mean
scone which arrives with a generous dollop of cream and raspberry jam on each plate, with extra scones in
a basket and fill ups for the teapot "whenever you're ready". It's a lovely welcome and a tasty tea.

roses, a garden umbrella and two ladies seated in the garden.
We start off choosing to sit at one of the garden table, where Gil the new puppy provides plenty of entertainment.

But the sun refuses to shine, so we opt for an indoor table and Colette soon moves the feast indoors for us.

Colette the owner lays the table for a cream tea.
I can heartily recommend WI ladies to book in here for one of their trips, as the gardens are full of interest and Madam Chairman would give the cream tea good marks out of ten. Colette's garden is beautiful and full of colour and interest.

wonderful blousey hollyhocks on the side of the house.

These fabulous hollyhocks climb up the side of the bed and breakfast.

the tearooms in the garden at South heathercombe.

There is a short sets of steps to cope with on the way up to the tea room, and another one to reach the higher garden beyond. Established woods surround the property and the whole area is quiet and away from traffic.

Starting on September the 3rd, the estate has a sculpture trail called Edge. Details on my September Diary page.

Thank you Martin and Colette for the warm welcome, the cream tea and for managing to babysit your adorable new puppy. You make it all look so easy, but I know it's not, especially all the hard work of weeding at this time of year.

Sylvia, an elderly visitor says thank you on her way out.

My neighbour Sylvia was very impressed, so watch out for her and her pals paying you another visit any day soon.

You can find South Heathercombe bed and breakfast details on my Widecombe page, and on the child friendly page.

Oh and of course I would most earnestly recommend it to garden lovers. Easy parking is at the side of the house.
