The Terrace at Tavistock food review by Jill Pendleton

The Terrace, above the Ordulph in Pym Street, Tavistock. PL19 0AW Visited on the 28th June 2011

The Terrace Restaurant from the road showing the glass fronted outside eating area.

If this establishment were on the main high street in Tavistock, then I reckon that it would be full of these....

2 ladies who lunch in the main dining space, sitting by one of the large window spaces.

...ladies who lunch, enjoying this new to me restaurant on the first floor above the Ordulph pub in Pym Street.
We happened on it quite by chance when nipping from charity shop to pastie shop at lunch time last week.

Martin the young bartender organising the bar tab.

It's not hugely obvious from the street that such a pleasant space is close at hand, but climb the swish staircase

to find a chic bar and seating area with a large spacious dining room beyond, impressive windows swathed

with posh drapery overlooking the quiet street .

Rob sitting on one of the wrought iron chairs in the sunny outside space.

As usual with any large eating space and most of the tables to choose Rob is endlessly patient as we change
tables a couple of times, and finally decide that we should maybe eat our lunch behind plate glass outside
on the balcony and then take our pudding inside so that we can experience both.

It was most relaxing sitting in this sheltered spot in the sunshine, looking out towards the church beyond
the old Tavistock Printing building and I couldn't think how we didn't know about it before.

Rob waiting for lunch to arrive. He is wearing his sunglasses.  Jane the waitress who served us arriving with the tascas.

Here's Rob enjoying the sunny spot where the very patient waitress Jane, could not have been more helpful.
I think I fazed her a bit when I asked if I could take her photo, but she happily complied when I mentioned that
I needed it for a food review. Look at her smile, it says "this mad woman will be gone in an hour, hopefully !".

tasca number one had a salmon filling

The fresh sweet tasting bread pocket is called a Tasca, and it's the first that we've encountered.
£6.50 each, I chose a poached salmon in dill and sour cream. It's rather odd to eat chunks of fresh fish in a bread
affair, but the side salad and quality crisps all went together well and thankfully there were no bones.

tasca number two had a spicy chicken filling, both were served with a side salad and crisps.

The tasca is a large handful of soft almost scone like texture. I know that this looks like the same photo but it's not.
Rob went for the Eastern Chicken version, which was chicken in mayo with curry spices and mango chutney.

The Terrace Restaurant menu in the foreground

The lunchtime menu had a Seafood Pie with shellfish and mixed fish at £8.95
A Ploughmans lunch with Cheddar, Stilton or homemade pate at £7.50,

Ashburton ham wih 2 free range eggs, side sald and home cut chips £7.95
A meat and salami plate with sun dried tomatoes, red onion chutney and fresh bread £7.95 and
A 4 oz or 8 oz burger choosing from Chicken, Beef or Veggie option £5.95 or £7.95.

All good choices along with various sandwiches £4.95 or Baguettes and Tascas £6.50.

We order two desserts and wander indoors again, Martin behind the bar is chatty and attentive.

"Do sit where you like" and sadly there are lots of places to choose from. This place deserves more custom.

a wonderfully yummt Turkish Delight cheescake pudding.

The prices are well judged. My pudding above is a Turkish delight cheesecake. Rich, smooth, Devonshire Clotted cream on the side, the couli or is it coulis ? around the plate is tart and tasty. At £4.95, it's worth calling in for this alone.

mango fruit and creme brulee pudding in a glass coffee cup.  the lunch menu with several choices on show.

Of course I had a spoonful of Rob's fruit creme brulee, a multi tiered collection of passion fruit, marscarpone and creme brulee topping served in a latte glass. Which was every bit as good as it looked. £4.95, another satisfied customer.

the main dining space at the Terrace Restaurant in Tavistock. Chic space to eat.

It's modern, snazzy and cool. There are stairs and a lift up should you need it. The blackboard outside says that they offer cream teas here, so I will add it to my Dartmoor Tearooms page. Hey that's a thought, I should have some

pictures of scones and jam and clotted cream to illustrate the enty shouldn't I ? Perfect excuse to go back again.

the restaurant from street level.the extra room off the dining room for extra seating or children's parties.

I also think that it would be a good place to take a wedding reception. Up a few more steps off the main restaurant
is another room (above) with extra tables that would make a perfect area to keep young children entertained
away from the main wedding party. I 'll pop them onto my weddings page too.

Usual question : Will we go again? Answer: Can't wait !
