Tavistock A market town on the south-west side of the Moor. Access from the A38.

For shoppers, this is the Mecca of Dartmoor. The Pannier Market behind the fine Town Hall is open each day from Tuesday to Saturday from 9 to 4 with much of interest such as Roger the Watch man (above) who can turn his hand to mending any manner of small gadgets. This is very much a day off town for us, there being at least a dozen good places for lunch, and a favourite food shop of ours, wonderful Creber's, the delicatessen shop in Brook Street, which is full of tasty stuff. You know you are in a good food shop when you smell that heady whiff of good coffee, cheeses and smoked
bacon on the air don't you ? Just standing in the doorway and breathing in is good for the soul ! The town hosts a Westcountry Balloon Festival each year. See my review of Donella's tearoom and Browns Hotel if you need feeding..
