Whiddon Down - just off the A30 dual carriageway, the main artery into Cornwall.
There is a well stocked Esso Service Station at Whiddon Down with a good range of shelf groceries,
Costa coffee, fuel (including for trucks), daily newspapers, and probably most helpful of all,
a cash point which is free to
use for debit cards. The staff are friendly even in the middle of Summer when the place gets full of excited holidaymakers travelling down to Cornwall. The service
area does get massively crowded at peak Summer periods. If you can't afford to wait when the traffic is queuing out on to the road, the closest available petrol to Whiddon Down is off the dual carriageway at Chagford under 5 miles away. BUT do telephone first on 01647 432246 to check that they are open as it's a small family business that closes some. Chagford itself is a small quaint Dartmoor town with 4 pubs and 5 cafes, which is well worth a visit.
Whiddon Down's Produce Market is 200 yards beyond the service area. It is held every 4th Saturday of the month in the Village Hall from 10 to noon. Buy vegetables, summer fruits, lots of jams and chutneys in season. Pies and home made cakes.... yummy ! Free car park and entry. See our Farmers Markets page for more information and photos.

There's one pub at Whiddon Down called The Post Inn (see below) that serves food every day.
Including Sunday roasts, and cream teas in the Summer. Open from 11 to 11. Large car park.
This is a good place to rendezvous with other travellers if you need a meeting point.

Spreyton is just a five minute drive from the A30 dual carriageway into Cornwall. Denis and Jan are fairly new to bed and breakfast, but one plus factor they have is that the Tom Cobley Inn, famed in the Widecombe Fair song, is just a stone's throw away.
The Cobbles offers double and twin rooms. I have yet to pop along and say hello to them, but my hairdresser lives
in Spreyton, so it won't be long until I do.

This house has a wonderful contemporary feel to it. Gaynor and Alan have really updated their home in a modern style making the bedrooms welcoming and light. The house looks a little austere as you drive past on the A382, but away from the road, the garden is pretty and guest accommodation is impressive with attention to detail. Sparkly clean and very comfortable.

I have not listed the Travel Lodge at Whiddon Down as a recommendation within my B&B pages as I suggest that if you come all the way to wonderful Devon you would do better to sample our more individual hospitality. One Travelodge is much like another, fairly basic
BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A BATHROOM THAT IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR A WHEELCHAIR USER whilst
you are on holiday, then you might like to know that all Travelodges have extra rooms on the ground floor close to the reception, that are tailor made for disabled travellers. If you click onto my photo of the bathroom above,
it will take you to the full size image, so that you can see the grip handles and the layout. The bedroom is large enough for wheelchair users to move around and has a TV and tea and coffee making facilities. There is an emergency pull cord at one side of the bed and another over the bath. There is no breakfast in the price which is why Travelodge rooms
seem so cheap, but as with every Travelodge, there is a cafe closeby, in this case it's a Little Chef.
There are several disabled parking bays at the front of the building, and the staff here are friendly and helpful.
The Travelodge, Whiddon Down, EX20 2QT. Children are welcome. Travelodge list their telephone number as being an 0871 number but here to save you money, is the local telephone number 01647 231626. and wifi is available.
For further accommodation within 4 miles of Whiddon Down, see the Chagford page and the Drewsteignton page.

National Trust fans will not want to miss stunning Castle Drogo,
designed by Sir Edwin Lutchens, the last castle to be built in England, standing high
above the beautiful Teign Valley just a 10 minute drive away.
There is a very good cafe at the Castle, outsidepay to get in area, that serves excellent
food, do see my food review, where you can sit outside near to a small play area.
