Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
Widecombe in the heart of Dartmoor. With the church 'the Cathedral of the Moor' standing proud in any view.
Widecombe has history galore and many folklore legends. Do take time to visit St. Pancras Church in Widecombe
(nothing to do with the railway station in London) where there are some truly wonderful stained glass windows here along with a letterbox stamp in the south transept for ardent letterboxing folk.
Visit the Village market if you can.
It is held on the 4th Saturday of each month in the Church House next to the church. The National Trust own this and the Sexton's Cottage by the lychgate. The ladies in the Trust shop are most helpful.
Anyone over the age of 40
will know of the Uncle Tom Cobley legend and can surely sing the song 'Tom Pearce, Tom Pearce lend me your grey mare'.
This poor creature had to take a heavy cargo to Widecombe Fair, as you can see in the picture above. This year the fair had heavy rain but it did not seem to stop everyone from enjoying themselves. Of the two pubs in Widecombe, the Rugglestone Inn here on the left, is a real treat with wonderful freshly cooked food.
Read my food review of the Rugglestone and if you visit the pub, be sure to let
me know if you agree with me, that it is worth seeking out.
Widecombe Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

This is without doubt the best bed and breakfast on my book for GARDENING FANS. Colette and Martin have recently taken over at South Heathercombe and have made all the right moves. The garden is part of the peaceful wooded Heathercombe estate over 1,000 feet up on Dartmoor. No passing traffic, heavenly garden, birdsong and a wide range of flora and fauna.
