From Saturday 30th June to Sunday 2nd September 'Reaching for Gold' is the annual Summer Exhibition at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen at Bovey Tracey, that displays a selection of new work produced by Members of the Guild, showcasing the very best in contemporary crafts practice from the South West region. The exhibition coincides with the 2012 Olympics, providing makers with an opportunity to reflect on the Olympic vision and to push their limits creatively through making, technique and materials. The title complements and follows on from the 2011 Summer Exhibition A Silver Thread. See more info on the Devon Guild website
From Friday 20th July to Sunday 19th August 2012 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the declaration of Yarner Wood, near Bovey Tracey, as a National Nature Reserve (one of Englands first). Sculptors Reece Ingram and David Brampton-Greene, photographer Simon Williams and poet Andy Cunningham will work with local children to produce an exhibition inspired by the species-rich habitat and heritage of this rare Western oak woodland. Simon Williams will also show images of Yarner, a place he has been photographing for several years at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. And on each Saturday of the exhibition, demonstrations of woodcraft skills will be given at the Guild. Including pole lathe turning, gypsy flower carving on a shaving horse, hurdle making, bodging and relief carving. Admission is free. See more on the Devon Guild website

Thursday 9th August The Okehampton Show is one of the largest gatherings of animals at a one day event in the South West with over 300 classes for Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Dairy and Pygmy Goats it is a marvellous showcase for quality livestock in this part of the country. Saturday 11th August Tavistock Farmer's Market at Bedford Square. The markets take place on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month 9 til 1 Everything on sale is produced locally, meat, cheese, bread and cakes, fresh vegetables, and stallholders are the farmers, growers or producers themselves. There is also an annual Christmas market in December. take a look at the market website or ltake a look at all of the farmer's markets in the Dartmoor area.
Wednesday 15th August Music at the Globe in Chagford. A musical event (every month third Wednesday) with a group of musicians, the Trans Dartmoor Session Band, from Moreton, Chagford & Bridford stepping outside of their normal band environment and getting together in a corner of the Globe Inn pub, to play some acoustic(ish) music... Great evenings with a large group of musicians playing to an appreciative audience. From 8.30pm on. All welcome FREE ENTRY. Visit the Globe Inn website for more information.
Thursday 16th August The best family day out on Dartmoor Chagford show this year offers 2 main events, the first a motorcycle display team 'The Imps' an unmissable display of discipline and skill from youngsters, with their youngest performer only 5 years old. Take a look at the Imps own website. Plus we have Bob Hogg and his Sheepdogs. Bob uses working border collies and Jake the bearded collie who give entertaining displays of how to round up, sheep, geese and ducks and this year's new addition Paxo the chicken!! This is a must for young children. Visit Bobs website As usual this will be a brilliant day out for all the family, horses, dog show, food hall, vintage cars and tractors on show, hog roast, kids races, beer tent, Morris dancing and 101 country attractions to enjoy. Sunday 19th August Open Mic Night at the Sandy Park Inn, near Chagford from 8.30pm They say it's the best Open Mic in Devon. You can perform in a proper venue with a full PA. Come along to play or just to have a listen! Held every third Sunday of the month. Tuesday 21st August Manaton village holds a market on each third Tuesday of the month where you can buy lots of local goods including cakes, puddings and pies, honey, fresh eggs, cheese, meat from local farms, pork, lamb, bacon, even locally made fudge. Get yourselves along to the Parish Hall to find all these goodies. Open from 10.30 to 12.30. Saturday 25th August Widecombe Village Market today from 10 to 4. Free entry. Stalls with an interesting range of produce, from olives and olive oil to locally grown vegetables and plants. Cheeses, apple juice, honey, home made bread, cakes, jams, chutneys etc. are all there with the core stalls being beef, lamb and pork from local Widecombe farms. Refreshments are provided by local groups and charities who benefit from the proceeds. Do come along and see for yourself. The Market has now become an established fixture on the village calendar. It is usually held on the fourth Saturday of the month apart from December when dates may vary. The main aim of the market is to benefit local producers and businesses. In order to continue to be varied and interesting and to continue to evolve, enquiries from new stall holders are always welcome.
