South Zeal, a medieval village in Dartmoor just 5 minutes drive off the A30 to Cornwall
The Oxenham Arms is the oldest building in the village of South Zeal, formerly a 12th century medieval monastery and manor house built around a prehistoric standing stone form the Neolithic period (which can still be seen in the Snug bar). Originally a settlement, South Zeal is at least 750 years old. The 13th Century village lay either side of the road from Exeter to Okehampton and Cornwall, on a ridge of well drained shale stretching from the bridge at the eastern end of the village to the top of hill in western extremity. South Zeal is famous for its "Burgage Plots".
Burgage Plots were enclosed fields established by the Lord of the Manor in the 13th Century from the "open" manorial fields. The tenants of the enclosed lands paid cash rent instead of, as previously, occupying land by virtue of having given feaudal service.
Today with a population of around 650, South Zeal remains a beautiful village, with two pubs, a great village stores, tea room and Post Office and many events taking place every week of the year. The village hosts the popular Dartmoor Folk Festival, which this year ius taking place om 7th - 9th August
